Don’t Stress: No ‘Poo

I was really reluctant to ‘go there’ today with a no ‘poo post, but I do want to talk about it, so here I am.

Several months ago I toyed around with the no ‘poo buzz.

I updated my journey when I started this blog explaining the benefits of ditching commercial shampoo. After doing it for a while, I had to adjust to the transition because my hair would take a life of it’s on every, single day. Between the smell of hair – yep, it doesn’t stink, but hair smells like hair – and my fight with heated tools, I gave in and started washing my hair every day.

Although I felt it necessary to clean my hair everyday, I have continued using all natural shampoo and conditioner (store bought). In my dreams I would be using the baking soda and ACV rinse but I’m not there yet.

So, I’ve been doing that in the meantime until this past weekend.

It’s been 4 days since I have washed my hair, at all. Not even water, people! (I feel like I have to add here that I have bathed my body with soap).

It wasn’t intentional. I was swimming, playing with my daughter, lounging around, designing on my etsy shop, and shooting guns at the hunting club to bond with my Boo.

I figured that since I was so free-spirited that I wouldn’t worry with my hair.

Lo and behold:

It is not oily. It is not dry. It is not nasty.

I’m thinking that it has finally transitioned over time by using all natural shampoo and conditioner.

So, this post isn’t a how-to guide, it’s to inspire!

If my crazy hair can eventually transition, anyone’s can. Everyone’s hair is different and there are so many ways to no/lo poo. It’s about sticking with it, not stressing, and focusing on something else in the meantime.

As of now, I’m just gonna rock along until I have to wash it. It also helps I have a new self-imposed work uniform hair style. Until then:

No poo it is…again!

  1. I can do just water each day if I wanted to. I tried this several months ago and was a success. I went back after wanting it smell good for a night out.

  2. I think natural shampoo and conditioner is a happy medium. 🙂 In my research on no-poo, I read that baking soda and ACV throw off the pH balance of hair. Have you read anything about that? Makes me a little nervous to ditch shampoo. 🙂

    1. I have read that too, Carissa. Also some people report that the baking soda and ACV rinse destroys their hair. Seems like since everyone’s hair type is so different, we just have to find what works best!

  3. I love the idea of living without shampoo, but I find it difficult to keep myself feeling good without my usual hair care routine. Old habits die hard.

    1. Mmmhmmm they sure do, Vanessa! I’ve found that this no/lo poo journey is waaaay different that my old shampooing and styling routine, for sure! My hair won’t allow me to do the same things I can when I shampoo and condition because it gets so curly lol!

    1. I know, girl. It’s a crazy ride! haha. I have fine and thin hair too. When I go days without using any shampoo whatsoever it gets WAY thicker and curlier – so actually, I have lots more body after a few days. It’s just like a totally different person’s hair that I don’t know what to do with though, ha! Once I run out of the natural shampoo/conditioner that I have now, I’m gonna get some Chagrin Valley Shampoo Bars to try out – I’m excited 🙂

      1. If you’re like me, the herb garden shampoo from there worked pretty well! I only had a sample size so I didn’t get to use it long term however. When you don’t shampoo for the day, may I ask what the texture of your hair is like? I’ve been bouncing around different regimens so much lately I can’t settle on anything!

      2. I’ll have to try the herb garden shampoo, then!

Well, it’s really hard to describe because I’ve bounced around so much too. This time though, it’s different because my hair doesn’t get as oily as it did the first time around.

Hmmm. Since I have not been days without washing at all (not even water) it’s gotten really curly (normally it just has a tiny bit of body). It’s even kinky at my roots. I have been wearing it pulled back in bobby pins because when it’s down it is soooo big and curly and full (and I have NO idea what to do with it).

So, since I’ve been wearing it up – I’m not sure how heat tools would do on it. I suspect getting it flat-ironed now would be a no go without washing and drying with a blow dryer.

It’s def a little oiler than it would be after washing every day but it’s not offensive or noticeable to anyone else. (now the first time I did this months ago it WAS gross). So it has to transition, but wondering since you have been using shampoo bars if it wouldn’t be so bad.

If you do try to just not shampoo for a few days consider just braving it and wearing it up too, makes it not so bad in case your natural hair is like mine…curly! haha

      3. My hair is fine, thin…and limp! As a result I do not use any heating tools because whatever I do falls out. As as result, I recently got a jaw-length A-line bob. That’s a goal of mine! I want to go natural for a while longer and then try forgoing shampoo altogether. I just hope it is possible with my hair. You give me hope!

      4. I LOVE me some short bobs too. We must have the same type ‘do because my hair is fine, thin, and limp as well. A hot mess to deal with lol. I can say that going natural poo for the last few months, then no ‘poo altogether has been a good transition for sure. I still plan on washing with natural shampoo and conditioner like, once a week (goal!) If your ready for a change and risk! Doooo it 🙂 I’m gonna see how long I can go and will update on the progress/outcome in a few weeks.

  4. This perspective is so refreshing; I think I breathed a sigh of relief when I got to the part where you just started using a cleaner product.

I tried going without years ago and just couldn’t handle the smell. I’m inspired anew to use ACV.

Do tell, please, what brand of shampoo & conditioner you’re using that’s working so well for you?

    1. It’s amazing how I used to never think about commercial shampoos because I ‘believed’ they worked so well. As it turns out; they just don’t – it causes a hot mess.

I started with Burt’s Bees shampoo/conditioner and it just felt like gunk in my hair 😦

Then, I switched and have since been using Andalou Naturals Sunflower & Citrus Shampoo, Conditioner, and Hair Spray.

I ordered them from luckyvitamin.com. It smells delicious and works really well.

I would love to just use ACV – maybe one day I will be super brave 🙂
