That picture above was a test!

I wanted to make sure that your life wasn’t totally disrupted, that it gave you a complete meltdown, or that if I posted it: the world would crumble around me. I am willing to bet, not one of those happened and by the looks out the window – it’s a clear blue, beautiful September day. So.

I haven’t washed or brushed my hair in a week.

Call me feral, but it makes me giddy.

The point is, there are a million ways to do the lo/no poo. It’s all over Pinterest and the interwebs.

The fact is, if you are interested in doing it, two things must happen first:

  1. You must be tired of trying to fight your natural hair, and spending so much time doing so
  2. Your give-a-damn has busted and you would like to spend your time doing other things

Since those 2 apply to me now, I can go about my business and rock some frizzy curls guilt-free.

The transition has been a bitch, but now that it’s not so oily: it’s all about that volume, baby.

How-To and What to Expect with No ‘Poo

We all have done experiments and changed our behaviors at some point or another. So, we know we can do it, it’s just a matter of doing it.

I’ve changed my behavior approximately 9,000,000,000 times in the last thirty-something years. Some of my changes stick, other’s don’t. We all change minute to minute throughout our lives, and that’s totally OK.

In recent posts I talked about my no/lo poo journey. This clearly doesn’t apply to everyone, but it does to me. It’s something worth experimenting because:

  • I want to save money instead of wasting it on beauty products
  • I want to spend less time primping in the mornings
  • I want to be OK with my natural, authentic self

That’s really the main motives behind this.

A lot of other’s are experimenting with the switch to no/lo poo as well. This is why if your interest is peaked and you go to research, there is so much information available that, quite honestly, makes it seem intimidating.

That’s because what works for one person, doesn’t for another. One person has xyz result and not the other.

So you are kind of frozen not knowing where to start because you simply don’t know what to do and are afraid of the outcome.

What I personally didn’t read a lot of was the honest-to-God truth about what to expect when doing the switch. It made me very leery at first because I know good and dang well that not everyone who does it has that much success, right?

I mean, I have lived long enough to just know better.

And so have you, which is why you may be scared to even try it.

How to start and what to expect:

Decision: You have to want to do this. It’s different from what you’ve always done. Years worth of sudsing up with commercial shampoo has created an exhilarating showering experience every, single day of your life for as long as you have known. If you go no ‘poo – you will not have this experience. You won’t be using shampoo so there won’t be any sudsing or bottled scents wafting in the shower any more.

If you decide to plunge, can you handle it? I mean, it sounds silly but seriously? Can you handle it?

If you are stuck in your decision process and just can’t make up your mind but still want to try it, there’s only one thing to do at this point:

Say eff-it and do it.

Get in the shower and don’t wash your hair.

Expectations: Please don’t expect to fall in love with your hair on this day. It’s going to feel grimy and oily and unmanageable. That’s because you aren’t used to having hair unwashed. Your hair is in shock because it’s actually being left alone for the first time in your life. It’s wanting to run free and roam the meadows.

Let it.

Just like any other change, getting used to unwashed hair takes time. It’s going to feel weird like you ‘forgot something’ and it’s not going to feel the same. You may feel self conscious because you are rocking some unwashed locks.

Don’t expect to style it the same way. At first, it would be wise to have a plan B on styling that day. For me, I twist it back with some bobby pins and go about my business.

After a few days of not washing your hair, don’t be surprised if you realize that you have never gotten to know your hair at all. It’s like a strangers head of hair and you will not know how to deal with it. Again, have a plan B until you figure it out – and you will, and I will too.

For some people, the unwashed hair stays oily for a week and for others months. You will not know how your hair will do until you try it.

Don’t be surprised if no one else on Earth even notices that you aren’t washing your hair. That will be a lightbulb moment when you realize you have been stressing over getting ‘perfect hair’ and no one else has ever cared but you.

Get excited that you will feel free and rebellious like a child that isn’t minding over-bearing adults. It’s like you are getting away with something you aren’t supposed to do. Because, after all, doesn’t everybody over-wash their hair? Doesn’t everybody continue to make commercial shampoo companies super rich while we spend hours a week primping in front of a mirror and spending oodles of our hard earned money unnecessarily?

No. Not everybody.

Don’t be surprised that after not washing your hair for several days that you start to love your natural self and question why you have ever put that kind of time in effort into your hair. You may question why you’ve been manipulating circumstances so much that you have totally ruined a perfectly good set of hair by constantly messing with it.

You may even realize that you are wild and free at heart and it’s not your problem if other people have an issue with what you do with your hair.

Best of all, you may just learn to love your beautiful, primal, loving, gorgeous, authentic self and just be happy with the way things are un-controlled.

And sometimes, having crazy hair – don’t care is the best way to have it after all. Wild and free. Rebellious and empowered. Loved and loving.

Don’t Stress: No ‘Poo

I was really reluctant to ‘go there’ today with a no ‘poo post, but I do want to talk about it, so here I am.

Several months ago I toyed around with the no ‘poo buzz.

I updated my journey when I started this blog explaining the benefits of ditching commercial shampoo. After doing it for a while, I had to adjust to the transition because my hair would take a life of it’s on every, single day. Between the smell of hair – yep, it doesn’t stink, but hair smells like hair – and my fight with heated tools, I gave in and started washing my hair every day.

Although I felt it necessary to clean my hair everyday, I have continued using all natural shampoo and conditioner (store bought). In my dreams I would be using the baking soda and ACV rinse but I’m not there yet.

So, I’ve been doing that in the meantime until this past weekend.

It’s been 4 days since I have washed my hair, at all. Not even water, people! (I feel like I have to add here that I have bathed my body with soap).

It wasn’t intentional. I was swimming, playing with my daughter, lounging around, designing on my etsy shop, and shooting guns at the hunting club to bond with my Boo.

I figured that since I was so free-spirited that I wouldn’t worry with my hair.

Lo and behold:

It is not oily. It is not dry. It is not nasty.

I’m thinking that it has finally transitioned over time by using all natural shampoo and conditioner.

So, this post isn’t a how-to guide, it’s to inspire!

If my crazy hair can eventually transition, anyone’s can. Everyone’s hair is different and there are so many ways to no/lo poo. It’s about sticking with it, not stressing, and focusing on something else in the meantime.

As of now, I’m just gonna rock along until I have to wash it. It also helps I have a new self-imposed work uniform hair style. Until then:

No poo it is…again!

The Journey Is Worth It

You know the drill. We buy a bazillion dollars worth of hair and make-up products all our lives and then wonder why our skin looks horrible, and our hair is thinning, bland, and falling out. It’s no secret that the products we buy are damaging, but we do it anyway because we think it’s no big deal.

Well, I had a turning point with my hair. A huge chunk broke off last month and I know I had to make a change in the products I was using. My face was broke out, red, and splotchy from all the creams and scrubs and medicines I was applying. To top it off- I was using Mr. Clean All Purpose Cleaner to clean house and it totally rusted my appliances and discolored my counter tops. If an ‘all purpose cleaner’ isn’t all purpose, then….I’m going green, baby.

This change is taking a while as I research and test products to arrive at a place where I love the items I buy and they actually work. It’s a process. If you have experienced the same type things I have and are looking for an alternative, experimenting and using less may be the answer.

It has been for me.

I am not an expert by any stretch. But, I have learned some things and I want to share.

  • No Poo/ Low Poo: I went no poo for a while, but have changed my process. I now only use natural shampoo, conditioner, and products. Unfortunately, I blow dry and flat iron my hair again. My wiley curls just wasn’t working out. Maybe one day I can be just as hardcore. However, I did learn that I will survive if I don’t wash my hair ever single day, and if my hair is curly and wild – so be it.
  • Natural Soap & Body Wash: I use Zum Bar soap and Burt’s Bees body wash. My skin is hydrated, dry-patch, and red bump free after a month! I thought there was no cure for my skin conditions (per dermatologists as well), but that’s just not the case. Apparently, regular chemical-filled soaps, body washes, and scrubs were destroying my skin.
  • Caveman Regimine Skincare: This is a miracle. I only wash my face with water and a baby soft wash cloth. No soap or creams or moisturizer touches it! I’ve been doing this for a while now and my blackheads are disappearing and not coming back, my red cheeks have nearly went away, and my skin glows.
  • Natural Makeup: This is still a work in progress, but currently I use Physicians Formula Organic CC Cream, and shimmer bronzer (or cinnamon) on my face. I’m phasing out my eye makeup and when it’s time to replenish it will be organic. I also use grapeseed oil on a cotton ball to remove my eye makeup.
  • No Sugar Diet: In a perfect world I would eat Paleo. That is my future wish, not my reality. However, I do not eat sugar – or when I do, it is minimal and natural occurring (like watermelon occasionally). This means lots of meats and veggies. Also hemp hearts and peanuts, almond milk, and coconut flour to name a few snacks and additions. Without a lot of carbs and eating foods of high protein, I am fully satisfied, full of energy, and get better sleep. It works for me.
  • Live With Less: I quit shopping to waste time. I evaluate every purchase and make sure it will be used and is in line with my core beliefs. I am paying of debt, so spending wildly is not an option.
  • Clearing Clutter: Getting rid of clutter and unused items in my home to make space for things that matter and brings me peace of mind.

I like to remind myself of the changes I am making and the progress I’ve made so far. Sometimes it seems like there is so much I need to change that it’s overwhelming. I didn’t make all these changes in one day. It has been phased over time and have allowed myself plenty of space to make mistakes, start again, and to experiment. I am having fun and enjoying the ride.

My journey to lo/no ‘poo has been interesting. It’s always a challenge to make a big change in life, and this is no exception. At first, you would think it sounds simple: just don’t wash your hair every day and use natural shampoos. Well, it’s a lot harder than that. Not only the routine itself, but how you get to know yourself in the process.

There’s the whole transition period, where your hair is oily and crazy and pretty much unmanagable.

Then, you have to figure out how to style your natural hair. I’m used to straight; but now I’m a curly girl.

After that, if you are like me, you don’t want to use a blow dryer or heat tools, so you learn to just let your hair be free.

My 3 week update:

  • I’m going about 3 days using water-only before using my Burt’s Bees natural shampoo and raw honey rinse. This is leaps and bounds away from my twice-a-day conventional shampoo routine.
  • I still let my hair air dry. I scrunch it a little, use some bobby pins if needed, and go about my business.
  • By the 3rd day I get a little oily, but I’m OK with it. It’s not offensive and the benefits I’m gaining far out way the process.

What’s awesome?

My mother and husband both commented yesterday on my curls! Finally someone noticed!

Now, I’m not doing this to gain attention: it’s solely for me. But I made sure not to tell anyone what I was doing because I wanted to focus.  I need accountability on some ventures, just not this one. It was just a little too personal and challenging internally and externally for me to be getting other peoples 2 cents.

They both were amazed at how curly my hair was. My husband even asked if I was going to continue because he really loves it!

So, I informed my mother of my no ‘poo venture. Of course she was supportive and had lots of questions. And my husband is finally thankful that I am just leaving my hair alone.

Most importantly: I am happy! My hair does it’s own thing and I am loving the curls. I have also gained so much time in the mornings thanks to my minimal hair routine. 

Moving forward:

  • I am wanting to be able to only ‘wash’ my hair once a week while continuing rinsing in between. I’m trying to be patient.
  • I intend on trying the raw apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse at some point.
  • I am going to get a better boar bristle brush= lifesaver.
  • I am going to be pushing a day out a week in not washing: I’m going 3 days between washing this week and will go 4 days between next week.

Sometimes getting out of our comfort zone pushes us to be our better self. If we are doing something that just isn’t working, it’s time to be brave and make a change.

It’s hard to argue when it’s overall just better, right?

This is the case with my no ‘poo journey. I’m loving it so much. It’s working me inside and out.

And then you went no ‘poo and actually got your wish, but you now have absolutely no idea how to keep your new ‘curly girl’ full-bodied hair tame?

Oh, right. That was me.

A No ‘Poo Journey: 2 Week Update

Have you heard about the no’ poo movement? This is where you give up chemically-filled shampoos, conditioners, and hair products and do a natural approach.

Creams, potions, products, brushes, dyes, elements; it all takes it’s toll on our hair after a while. Forever I have said that I wish I could just scrunch my hair and go instead of spending at least an hour getting primped in the mornings. It was cute when I was young to spend this kind of time, but now that I’ve done it for so long, it’s just played out.

7 hours. Seven hours a week I have spent on my hair and makeup. That’s a full day’s work or an entire night’s sleep I have missed out on trying to get my crispy-fried, damaged, flat, wavy hair straight, full-bodied and presentable. The tragic truth is that it still doesn’t work. I am unsatisfied with the result and have damaged my hair so badly that it probably needs to be shaved bald and start over.

Since nothing has worked, no ‘poo sounds like it is worth a try to bring out my natural, healthy hair.

Why no’ poo?

  • Less time wasted in the mornings
  • Simple, easy and carefree
  • No harsh chemicals ruining my hair
  • Super cheap
  • Natural, easy, no fuss

These are things I want so badly in my hair routine.

For the last 2.5 weeks I have switched from traditional shampoo & conditioner to water only, honey ‘poo {diluted raw honey} , and Burt’s Bees products. I’ve given up the hair dryer, curling iron, and straightener (except once!).

But my hair is so oily and nasty, I HAVE TO shampoo every day, you say.

I was saying that too. What I have already discovered is that’s simply not true. Take it from me. I was a twice a day shampooer, blow drier, straighter, hair teaser, product gunker as well.

Traditional shampoos strip the hair of natural oils leaving it dry and brittle. Conditioner and hair treatments are used to put moisture back into the hair. The scalp then over produces oils to compensate.

Take all that away and it’s not necessary once you let your body do it’s job.

Less truly is more!

There is a gruesome transition period:

Pretty much everyone will go through a transition period when switching to natural products or no poo. We have tricked our scalps and depleted it so badly. It takes a little creativity to make it through the transition period, but the results are amazing.

My hair has it’s own personality and has done some crazy things during the transition. It’s been oily, crazy, full-bodied, limp, dry, hydrated: you name it. I’ve been embarrassed, self conscious, and free all at the same time.

But, it’s starting to actually work.

2I’ve been documenting the transition above. There are so many different ways to no/lo poo. I have not gotten an exact routine yet but am trying some things out.

My routine so far:

  • Rinse hair with water only every day
  • Air dry
  • Sleep with it up in a loose bun
  • Wash hair with Burt’s Bee’s Shampoo once or twice a week with a raw honey rinse
  • Brush hair with a boar bristle brush before washing {didn’t use it at first, but am obsessed now! This literally saved my dry, frizzy issue}
  • Embrace my natural hair

It feel so good to let go of the mask I’ve been wearing with my hair. I can finally just let it be and go about my business without fear of what others think. It’s not easy, but I am determined to continue. The results are so awesome.
