Human beings are spiritual creatures. We have soul. We have intriguing thoughts and incredible feelings. This is how we are set apart from the other animals. It’s science.

While science is not my strong suit, I can totally grasp this concept.

Since we are spiritual, we thrive on feeding that part of us. We need it and crave it. Unfortunately, it’s one of the first things to go in life because we will, you know, just get to it later.

Well, later turns into a really long time. We first focus on the Grind, the to-do list, our dreams and aspirations. Sooner or later, we burn completely out. We get sick and tired of being sick and tired. Something begins to feel like it’s ‘missing’ but we don’t know what it could be. We search, we splurge, we cry.

At this point, it is of serious value to take a look at our spirituality. Has it been neglected? Have you prayed? Do you remember what sunlight and dirt feel like on your skin? Have you silenced the outside noise that never shuts up long enough to breathe?

I have been in this situation more times than I like to admit.

A recent turning point was when I was so weak: physically, mentally, emotionally. I felt like I turned over every possible stone. I was getting exercise and rest. I was doing what I was “supposed to.” I was giving myself -ALL of myself- to my loved ones. That list that rolls on and on? Yeah, I was on it. But nothing seemed to feel right.

As I was moving my bed to a new location, I found my Bible. It was so pretty and crisp and clean. It was neatly tucked away all sacred-like. The pages were perfectly written in purple font and laid so crisp on top of each other.

I broke down and cried.

Why was my Bible so pristine? In an embarrassed, hurried hump I opened it up like it was the first time I had ever heard those precious words.

I grabbed my pen and ferociously made notes. I combed for any bit of inspiration that could ever be discovered. Each phrase was a new ‘aha’ moment. I lingered. Prayed. Sat silently, shaking all over.

I had been neglecting my faith. My SOUL.

A crisp, un-tattered Bible no longer served me. Had I not touched it? Had I been afraid to ‘mess it up?’

I was ashamed and felt guilty.

Friends, shame and guilt are not welcome when getting involved in spiritual things. 

Spirituality, faith, belief, forgiving yourself, and being grateful are all part of our life.

If you are in a ditch and have no way out consider loving and balancing by giving your Spirit some much needed attention. It needs to be fed, too. You need balance. Love. Freedom. Unleash your soul. Give it a chance to soar.

Tending to Your Soul

Yoga isn’t about executing the poses perfectly or having the best balance. Yoga is connecting with yourself. Yoga is like learning to breathe again, or that moment when you jump out of bed in the morning, rush outside to do the sun salutation, and you’re utterly blinded by how brilliant the world can be. Yoga is taking a moment from your stressful, up-beat life and remembering you have a soul that needs tending to. ~ Unknown

The world truly can be beautiful and brilliant when we take the time to slow down and enjoy it. This has always been so hard for me: just as it is for so many people.

I feel that it is selfish and un-productive if I stop to breathe and do a few stretches.

Since I have began my yoga journey, I see how important it is to take the time to look within yourself. Yoga is not about being a pretzel, it’s about being deliberate. Being deliberate in loving on yourself every day. It’s about letting go of house chores realizing that it’s OK to take a break, get healthy, and press on within. When sticking through yoga, the to-do list shows up in the mind, but you learn to see it, and let it go. You begin to understand that the dishes will still be in the sink when you get done. They will. And it is perfectly fine.

It’s a daily practice of peace.

Whether you do yoga or not, it’s important you find something that allows you to be still, get healthy, and focus on yourself. It could be a walk, a bubble bath, a jog down a trail, gardening, drawing, watching the sunset. If it means you check in with yourself for at least 20 minutes or so to allow your self-worth to come forward: then you have found it! When you find it, do that and do it every day.

Meditation: How to Begin

This is one of my favorite meditation spots.

Meditation has done wonders for me over the last few months. More than exercise, therapists, or medication ever thought about.

It’s powerful because you take back control of your thoughts. It helps bring you back to center and allows you to explore your authentic self.

Life has a way of becoming hectic, wild, chaotic, busy…if we let it.

If you are at your wit’s end and don’t know what else to do, like I was not too long ago, it’s time to try something else.

How to meditate:

This is something that you will discover for yourself because there are tons of different ways people do it. It’s not just for Yogi’s or Buddhists. It’s also for you.

Just like everything else, it takes practice and patience. It also takes mindfulness and the willingness to try something new.

Here is how I started out:

  • 2 minutes: I made it a priority to sit with myself for a minimum of 2 minutes every day. Normally this was in the bathtub where I could relax after kids were in bed.
  • After some time, I then became mindful of meditation: driving down the road, sitting on the porch, drinking coffee, cooking, cleaning, etc.
  • I welcomed my thoughts. Let’s be real, they don’t stop. Our minds go and go and are constantly chattering. I simply observed and then watched them float away like a balloon.

I try to meditate every, single day. I don’t put a time limit on it, I just do it. I make a point to be mindful, to be quite, and to look within.

You don’t need a fancy room or pillow to meditate.

It’s just a simple exercise that you can do to quieten your thoughts and gain clarity.

My recommendations:

  • Quiet room: bathtub, bedroom, on the road; anywhere with little distraction
  • Peaceful music: nature sounds, slow tunes with no words
  • Start with deep breathing. Take your time and take long, deep breaths. Focus on the in and out
  • Watch your thoughts. They will be there, but after a little time and with a little breathing they will become less and less
  • Essential oil: Sometimes I like to add a little ambiance to the experience. Frankincense brings a little woodsy aromatherapy and helps me focus
  • Let go of guilt. Don’t feel guilty about giving yourself a few minutes throughout the day to ease anxiety and get to know yourself again
  • Stay with it. You may feel tempted to procrastinate feeling like you are ‘wasting time’ just sitting and breathing. When I first started out my thoughts were all the same: “I really should be doing the dishes” “I’m missing my favorite show” “I have to fold laundry” “Hmm. I’d really like to re-decorate this room” Sit with these thoughts and let them go. They will pass and you can remain calm and realize that these thoughts are not urgent. They will come back later, I promise.

After meditating, you will be able to attack your tasks, family, and self with a calmer attitude. You will learn what is most important to you. You will be able to let go of anxiety. You will regain control of your thought patterns.
