Hold up.

This blog is my place to discuss how I’m simplifying, changing, growing, and working to live more deliberate instead of desperate lifestyle.

It’s not really a thrifting or money saving blog, however I am absolutely living more frugally and paying off debt to become a better version of myself.

I don’t coupon or shop with a lot of hacks. I have tried that and it was more work than it was worth, so my solution has been pretty dang simple:

Shop with common sense.

Yep, that’s it and it has been proving to work out nicely.

Here is a stellar example that just blew my mind: tea tree oil

There it sits at $14.99.

Well, I just wasn’t going to pay that for hair oil anyway so I just moved right along.

I rounded the corner looking to see if there was a natural dry shampoo because I am almost out.

What do you know? Right there in the ethnic section was tea tree oil

And it was $2.79.

Am I losing my mind and going crazy? That is a MAJOR, MASSIVE, INCREDIBLE price difference. We aren’t just talking about a buck or two.

So, if my scalp gets itchy I know what to do.

What a Minimalists Makeup Routine May Look Like

We all have to define our simplifying journey for ourselves. Each of us are different. We have different passions, motives, and reasons. For me, I am simplifying many aspects of my life to create clarity and joy. My clutter, spending habits, and schedule are taking away the most valuable thing in my life:

Time to do what I love doing.

This lifestyle that I created is stealing away what I want most. It’s finally taking it’s toll on my health. I’m suffering from true, shameless burnout. My stress is the worst it’s ever been. My emotional and mental health is a struggle.

My de-cluttering efforts are paying off and I am finally thinking more clearly. It hasn’t happened over night. As a matter of fact, it’s taken me months of fierce, ruthless, savage change. It’s primal, and it’s serious.

There are small things I do that seem like no big deal. But when it’s all compiled into one day – it is a huge deal over time.

I’ve changed a bunch of things, and one of my favorite changes is my beauty routine.

A few things that have helped ease my dependency on commercial products are:

1. Caveman Regimine: I only wash my face with a baby rag and water. Facial washes were stripping my face of natural essentials leaving me clogged, rashy, reddened, and dry. Now my face does it’s on thing. My face thanks me, has cleared up, and I’m not wasting money on chemical filled products.

2. Natural Body Soap: For the same reason as my facial cleansing routine. My body was patchy, bumpy, and dry from body washes and chemical soaps. Now I use all natural goat milk soap. My skin has cleared and is moisturized naturally.

3. Makeup: If I could have all the money spent on makeup I would be sitting pretty. Perhaps I believed what the commercials told me about makeup making me more beautiful? Maybe I just bought new products because I felt like I deserved it? Regardless, it’s expensive and wastes good space and time. I got rid of all the products that I rarely used and now I keep the essentials.

4. Eyeliner: I only wear on special occasions, not everyday anymore.

My makeup routine is a drastic change from the past. I got rid of concealers, fake lashes, colored eye shadows, eyeliner shades, foundation and an eyelash curler.

I realize now that the bronzer highlights just enough and mascara opens my eyes and it’s all I really need for every day wear. No one else has commented on my makeup change. It takes me 1 minute to do my makeup now.

It’s easy, cheap, and I feel ‘done’ enough for work and still feel good about myself.

When I run out of my current stash, I am going to replace with more natural ingredients. I feel this will help further reduce redness and dryness with a little time.

It works. The more time I have in the morning to watch the sunrise and meditate, or do a little yoga before work, the better. I can do that instead of using my face as a canvas. Simplifying my beauty routine has changed my mornings. Less stress, and more time to ease into my day.

No ‘Poo: 3 Week Update

My journey to lo/no ‘poo has been interesting. It’s always a challenge to make a big change in life, and this is no exception. At first, you would think it sounds simple: just don’t wash your hair every day and use natural shampoos. Well, it’s a lot harder than that. Not only the routine itself, but how you get to know yourself in the process.

There’s the whole transition period, where your hair is oily and crazy and pretty much unmanagable.

Then, you have to figure out how to style your natural hair. I’m used to straight; but now I’m a curly girl.

After that, if you are like me, you don’t want to use a blow dryer or heat tools, so you learn to just let your hair be free.

My 3 week update:

  • I’m going about 3 days using water-only before using my Burt’s Bees natural shampoo and raw honey rinse. This is leaps and bounds away from my twice-a-day conventional shampoo routine.
  • I still let my hair air dry. I scrunch it a little, use some bobby pins if needed, and go about my business.
  • By the 3rd day I get a little oily, but I’m OK with it. It’s not offensive and the benefits I’m gaining far out way the process.

What’s awesome?

My mother and husband both commented yesterday on my curls! Finally someone noticed!

Now, I’m not doing this to gain attention: it’s solely for me. But I made sure not to tell anyone what I was doing because I wanted to focus.  I need accountability on some ventures, just not this one. It was just a little too personal and challenging internally and externally for me to be getting other peoples 2 cents.

They both were amazed at how curly my hair was. My husband even asked if I was going to continue because he really loves it!

So, I informed my mother of my no ‘poo venture. Of course she was supportive and had lots of questions. And my husband is finally thankful that I am just leaving my hair alone.

Most importantly: I am happy! My hair does it’s own thing and I am loving the curls. I have also gained so much time in the mornings thanks to my minimal hair routine. 

Moving forward:

  • I am wanting to be able to only ‘wash’ my hair once a week while continuing rinsing in between. I’m trying to be patient.
  • I intend on trying the raw apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse at some point.
  • I am going to get a better boar bristle brush= lifesaver.
  • I am going to be pushing a day out a week in not washing: I’m going 3 days between washing this week and will go 4 days between next week.

Sometimes getting out of our comfort zone pushes us to be our better self. If we are doing something that just isn’t working, it’s time to be brave and make a change.

It’s hard to argue when it’s overall just better, right?

This is the case with my no ‘poo journey. I’m loving it so much. It’s working me inside and out.

Caveman Skincare

A lot of us have spent so much time and energy on over-the-counter and medicated facial cleanser. We scrub, exfoliate, moisturize; wear clay masks, apply toners and astringent, and pop zits.

If you are like me, then all of this started as a pre-teen when acne was running wild and it was cool to start using beauty products and makeup.

I’m in my thirties and the question still remains:

Why do I still have crazy skin and what can I purchase and do to make it go away?

It seems like I have tried everything imaginable and nothing is making it any better.

I had a turning point after I was using a combination of facial exfoliation, medicated facial wash, charcoal mask and makeup: my face broke out unbelievably and my cheeks turned beet red and very sore.

That’s when I made the decision.

It’s time to do something drastically different.

Then, I stumbled upon the Caveman Regimen in skincare. It really doesn’t get any more simple:

  • Wash your face with water only
  • Or, don’t wash it at all

I opt for the washing my face with water only and a baby soft rag.

After only 3 weeks, my skin has totally cleared up and my oils have regulated. Also, my black and whiteheads came out on their own. I will admit: it was disgusting but so amazing at the same time. After the first week, I looked in the mirror and they all made their way to the surface. If I hadn’t been in such shock, I would have taken a picture because it was wild; gross, but awesome at the same time. I’ve been trying for years to get them all out: biore strips, exfoliation, mashing. Well, they are gone now and haven’t returned. I’m sold and lo and behold my body is doing what it is meant to do. All on it’s own.

Why make the switch?

  • Conventional facial cleansers have chemicals and medication that may simply be way too strong for your face. They also can be stripping you of natural oils causing you to dry out and break out
  • You have tried every product on the market all your life and nothing is working
  • You want to save money. Water only is free!
  • You want to simplify your beauty routine
  • You want clear skin
  • You want to trust your body. The body is a machine made to cleans, heal, and grow all on it’s own. It doesn’t need our help with products. It already knows what to do if we just let go and allow it to do what it’s designed to do.

It’s really not as scary or gross as it sounds. It’s actually very beautiful and skin is allowed to heal naturally – which, is what your body is trying to do in the first place before we take it upon ourselves to slather and scrub it raw.

What to expect after making the switch from conventional to caveman:

  • Few days of transition. My skin was very oily and felt weird for a few days. I wasn’t used to water only and I had the strong desire to go back to my products. But, I held strong and am so glad I did. After a few days (depending on the person), your skin will begin to regulate and you can continue water only washing until it becomes your new norm.
  • You will realize that you have been spending way too much time and money on facial cleansers. Haven’t you heard that companies know that you will have to keep coming back for more? You try it: skin dries out, you buy moisturizer. You break out: you buy acne cream. You use makeup to cover acne: cycle starts over and continues.
  • You simplify your routine. I spend my mornings meditating, working on blog posts, yoga, and sipping coffee instead of slathering makeup on top of makeup to conceal my blemishes. Now, I put a little organic CC cream on my face and do something else.
  • It becomes the norm. After a few weeks, you quit thinking about your face. You don’t reach for cleansers in the bathtub. Oils regulate and skin clears. Ah. So nice.

Am I going to continue with caveman skincare?

Without a doubt.

The results can’t be denied. I wanted:

  • Simplified beauty routine
  • To save money
  • Clear skin

I now have all three.

It’s healthier and my skin is happier. Much, much happier.

A No ‘Poo Journey: 2 Week Update

Have you heard about the no’ poo movement? This is where you give up chemically-filled shampoos, conditioners, and hair products and do a natural approach.

Creams, potions, products, brushes, dyes, elements; it all takes it’s toll on our hair after a while. Forever I have said that I wish I could just scrunch my hair and go instead of spending at least an hour getting primped in the mornings. It was cute when I was young to spend this kind of time, but now that I’ve done it for so long, it’s just played out.

7 hours. Seven hours a week I have spent on my hair and makeup. That’s a full day’s work or an entire night’s sleep I have missed out on trying to get my crispy-fried, damaged, flat, wavy hair straight, full-bodied and presentable. The tragic truth is that it still doesn’t work. I am unsatisfied with the result and have damaged my hair so badly that it probably needs to be shaved bald and start over.

Since nothing has worked, no ‘poo sounds like it is worth a try to bring out my natural, healthy hair.

Why no’ poo?

  • Less time wasted in the mornings
  • Simple, easy and carefree
  • No harsh chemicals ruining my hair
  • Super cheap
  • Natural, easy, no fuss

These are things I want so badly in my hair routine.

For the last 2.5 weeks I have switched from traditional shampoo & conditioner to water only, honey ‘poo {diluted raw honey} , and Burt’s Bees products. I’ve given up the hair dryer, curling iron, and straightener (except once!).

But my hair is so oily and nasty, I HAVE TO shampoo every day, you say.

I was saying that too. What I have already discovered is that’s simply not true. Take it from me. I was a twice a day shampooer, blow drier, straighter, hair teaser, product gunker as well.

Traditional shampoos strip the hair of natural oils leaving it dry and brittle. Conditioner and hair treatments are used to put moisture back into the hair. The scalp then over produces oils to compensate.

Take all that away and it’s not necessary once you let your body do it’s job.

Less truly is more!

There is a gruesome transition period:

Pretty much everyone will go through a transition period when switching to natural products or no poo. We have tricked our scalps and depleted it so badly. It takes a little creativity to make it through the transition period, but the results are amazing.

My hair has it’s own personality and has done some crazy things during the transition. It’s been oily, crazy, full-bodied, limp, dry, hydrated: you name it. I’ve been embarrassed, self conscious, and free all at the same time.

But, it’s starting to actually work.

2I’ve been documenting the transition above. There are so many different ways to no/lo poo. I have not gotten an exact routine yet but am trying some things out.

My routine so far:

  • Rinse hair with water only every day
  • Air dry
  • Sleep with it up in a loose bun
  • Wash hair with Burt’s Bee’s Shampoo once or twice a week with a raw honey rinse
  • Brush hair with a boar bristle brush before washing {didn’t use it at first, but am obsessed now! This literally saved my dry, frizzy issue}
  • Embrace my natural hair

It feel so good to let go of the mask I’ve been wearing with my hair. I can finally just let it be and go about my business without fear of what others think. It’s not easy, but I am determined to continue. The results are so awesome.
